Welcome To Huntsville, Alabama
Located in northern Alabama on the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Huntsville is routinely listed as a favorite city of residents and visitors alike. Early Days of Huntsville
Huntsville dates back to 1805 and was founded by LeRoy Pope and John Hunt, who were both Freemasons. In 1811, Huntsville was formally incorporated and became the first incorporated town in Alabama. In its early days, Huntsville was a thriving farming town, and the Memphis and Charleston Railroad was built through the town in 1855, marking its status as an emerging center of industry.
Huntsville in the 1950s-60s
Huntsville gained widespread recognition during the Space Race and is nicknamed “The Rocket City.” In 1958, the U.S. launched its first satellite into space from Huntsville. In 1950, NASA’s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) was established and became a major center for aerospace innovation and technologies throughout the 1960s. This flight center developed the Saturn V rocket, which sent Apollo astronauts into space and to the moon.
Huntsville Today
Today, Huntsville is considered to have the second largest technology and research park in America — Cummings Research Park — which is second only to the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. It is also home to the most educated population in the state, given its tech, aerospace, engineering, and defense jobs.
